Every person has weak spots in the abdominal wall.
One of these weak points in the connective tissue is the navel. The abdominal wall is constantly exposed to high pressure, which increases significantly when lifting loads, coughing or sneezing. The abdominal wall also has to withstand high pressure during pregnancy.
An umbilical hernia occurs when the connective tissue around the navel is too weak to give in to the pressure in the abdominal cavity. A gap (hernial orifice) forms in the abdominal wall through which the peritoneum protrudes into a so-called hernial sac. Under certain circumstances, parts of the intestine can also protrude into this hernial sac.
