Gynecomastia male breast surgery is one of the most common operations performed on men. A distinctive, athletic chest is one of the ideals of beauty for men. It doesn't look so good when a man develops a more feminine breast shape. This type of male breast is also called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be treated simply, effectively and permanently with liposuction.
In men, there is often a genetic cause for an increased accumulation of fat cells in the chest. The men affected are usually embarrassed when this increase in fat in the chest is so large. These men avoid being seen in public with their upper bodies bare. They change their clothing habits and do not like to wear tight T-shirts or other items of clothing.
Liposuction can be used to permanently remove these reserve fat cells and thus the problem areas. The annoying fat deposits are removed through targeted suction. We prefer the proven and safe tumescence procedure for this.
Who hasn't experienced them? Unpleasant fat deposits that just won't go away despite exercise and a healthy diet. From around the age of 20, the number of fat cells in our body is constant, meaning that when we gain or lose weight, only the filling level of the fat cells changes. In addition, due to genetic factors, fat cells tend to fill up in certain regions of the body (so-called "critical zones"), which hardly improve even with significant weight loss.
There are many reasons for an excessive accumulation of fat cells: persistent poor nutrition, little to no exercise, genetic predisposition, pregnancy or age-related changes in metabolism or hormone levels.
Gynecomastia Surgery – Synonyms & Principle
synonyms:
removal of excess male glandular and connective tissue
principle:
Removal of excess breast tissue and connective tissue in men by liposuction or resection, with or without an incision around the nipple (sometimes even downwards and in the inframammary fold – but we try to avoid this as much as possible)
is combined with…
- Fat Freezing (as a supplement if the fat reduction and tightening effect is to be maximized in order to avoid an incision around the nipple if possible
efficiency
Basically, in theory, almost any level of efficiency (size) can be achieved here - but of course it doesn't always make sense. The framework conditions/restrictions dictate, for example:
- fabric strength
- extent of breast tissue
- width of the upper body
- ability of the tissue to tighten after surgery
duration of surgery
On average, the removal of a male breast gland (without tightening incision, without special features) takes approx. 30-45 minutes
for both sides so approx. 1-1.5 hours
repetition of the treatment
The operation can be carried out in different ways:
Sometimes suction is used first and then the surgeon waits to see how well the tissue tightens. If it is tight enough, only one operation is required. If the tissue is not tight enough after healing, the excess skin is removed in a second operation.
Some patients prefer a more radical approach and are generous with the incision around the scar. This means that everything can most likely be done in one procedure (unless the scar is not attractive and scar revision is advisable).

decision-making aids
Essentially, these are fundamental decisionsthat constitute a surgical correction of gynecomastia.
Suction & Cutting?
Suctioning softer tissue is usually possible. True gynecomastia with firm glandular tissue behind the nipple cannot usually be suctioned out - so at least a small incision is necessary to remove the firm tissue.
If excess skin occurs (which often cannot be predicted exactly before or during surgery), then a ring-shaped removal of the excess around the areola is necessary and sensible.
If the patient can imagine a second procedure, they can relax and wait for the excess skin to be tightened. The incision around the nipple can be very annoying - and even more so when bathing.
Pre-operative assessment
Before an operation for a true gynecomastia, it is usually advisable to carry out a hormone status test together with the urologist. An ultrasound can also help with the clarification before treatment. If it is only soft, especially fatty tissue, the clarification usually does not have to be carried out to this extent.
compression garments
Especially if only suction is used - and the hope is for the best possible tightening effect - it makes sense to shape and support the breasts from the outside by consistently wearing well-fitting compression garments for 5-6 weeks. Therefore, in most cases, midsummer is not the first choice for this procedure.
What should you have heard/read before gynecomastia surgery?
Scar: If it is necessary, it can sometimes be of poorer quality. Therefore, it makes sense to avoid cuts if at all possible. But not if excess skin is a problem. With a two-stage procedure, there is less swelling and tension in the second procedure - and therefore better scarring - and one is often surprised by the tightening effect of the tissue - and therefore no second operation is necessary.
Prejudices
A little bit of breast can't bother a man...
facts
...but it often does! If the problem can be solved with suction alone (and usually under local anesthesia), the effort and side effects can also be calculated very well.
most common possible side effects/complications
- Scar!
- infection
- postoperative bleeding
- Asymmetry (always present on two sides to a certain extent)
- irregular surface
- numb feeling
- recurrence
details Information on possible complications can be found in the information documents
In summary, good preparation (information, explanation, preliminary examinations, upper body analysis, etc.), the surgeon's experience and modern techniques for fat reduction are the most important factors for the success of gynecomastia surgery.
You should avoid…
- being too generous with the cut and scar
- if necessary, a scar is still better and less disturbing than hanging excess skin
anesthesia
Possible anesthesiaforms for gynecomastia surgery
- Local anesthesia
- Local anesthesia + twilight sleep
- gentle general anesthesia
the operation
Deadlines must be met in Austria (surgical information and anesthesia information) – this means that there is a waiting period of at least 3-4 weeks from the decision to undergo breast enlargement, but often longer.
no blood-thinning medication until 10 days before surgery!
THINKING POSITIVELY – helps. It not only prolongs life, but is also always a good first step towards any treatment or operation.
the operation
rest for 3 weeks in the sense of:
- do not lift more than 5-6kg
- nothing jerky
- don't work headfirst
compression shirt for 5-6 weeks nearly 24 hours a day
On the other hand, short compression shirt breaks for showering and also for draining the wound area (lymphatic drainage) are useful and recommended
our preferred technique/recommendation
- Local anesthesia with or without twilight sleep
- careful clarification before the procedure (anamnesis, urologist, radiologist)
- Vacuum the affected areas as much as possible
- only remove the really solid areas with as little cutting as possible
- sometimes planning for two procedures and waiting for the tightening effect or development of excess skin – which is then removed in a second procedure (usually under local anesthesia)
- compression garments!
Cost
Guidelines:
Approximately 3200 Liposuction Gynecomastia in LA
approx. 3500 Liposuction Gynecomastia with Periareolar Tightening in LA
approx. 4000 Liposuction Gynecomastia in twilight sleep
approx. 4500 Liposuction Gynecomastia with Periareolar Tightening in Twilight Anesthesia
500 periareolar tightening on both sides in LA (after previous liposuction)
400 optional overnight stay at the clinic with nurse/450 for overnight stay from Friday to Saturday – if necessary or useful
100 Costs for day admission to the clinic (if no overnight stay is planned) – if necessary and reasonable
possible costs for anesthesia information (approx. 80)
190 compression shirt
The prices listed are average values and could be cheaper or more expensive. The final total price will be determined during the second consultation (=consent) depending on the individual effort/planned operation time, combinations, desired clinic/room category and other factors.
At the turn of the year, clinic prices are adjusted and may then be slightly higher.
reasonable budget
A final cost estimate is only possible and meaningful after a detailed on-site inspection and clarification of individual wishes.
downtime
In general, 2-3 weeks of rest be taken into account – this means specifically:
- lifting no more than 5-6 kg
- no jerky movements
- do not perform any activities overhead
Important to know…
- Recently, the focus in treating male breasts has been on suction - and it is always amazing how well the areas that have been suctioned tighten and adjust. If this is a realistic case (and it is impossible to predict this before or even during the operation) we are happy to initially forgo the incision (which can be very disturbing if the scar quality is poor).
- If the desired tightening effect does not occur, the excess skin can be removed in a second small procedure.
