Dermabrasion – Medical dermabrasion targets the superficial skin layer ground with a diamond grinding head and removed until the smallest bleeding occurs. Due to the significantly greater penetration depth Medical dermabrasion differs in its effect from cosmetic dermabrasion.
Afterwards, a foam bandage is applied for a few days under which new, rosy, soft and wrinkle-free skin develops. It is extremely important after the treatment consistent sun protection!
Dr. Durnig: “For me, dermabrasion is still the best method for treating wrinkles around the mouth A big advantage is the slight pigment change in contrast to other methods.”
Dermabrasion – Synonyms & Principle
synonyms: medical abrasion, skin surface abrasion, skin surface renewal, resurfacing
principle: Removal of the superficial layer of skin to reduce wrinkles (especially around the mouth)
is often combined with…
- hyaluronic acid
- blood plasma
- facelift, etc.
efficiency
The superficial layer of skin is removed very precisely – until small bleeding occurs. A new, finer, fresher skin surface is formed, which looks younger and refreshed.
Deeper wrinkles with a lack of volume must be additionally filled with hyaluronic acid.
Botox can also reduce fine wrinkles around the mouth
treatment duration
A dermabrasion lasts on average 45 minutes
repetition of the treatment
The removal of the superficial layer of skin is essentially permanent. Of course, the surface area of the skin can increase again as we get older.
Then a repetition can also be useful.
However, it makes more sense to supplement in other areas – moisture, volume, etc.
Application in which body region
Wrinkles around the mouth = goatee region
alternatives
- Laser (but be careful: pigment changes! - but this can happen with any removal technique - even with dermabrasion or peeling - sun protection in the year after the treatment (especially the first few weeks after) is important!!)
- peeling
- jet plasma
Should I have dermabrasion do it at all? – Sometimes it is better not to do something at all.
Good advice highlights all the advantages and disadvantages of a treatment – and thus helps you make the right decision.
The region around the mouth is often a combination regionThis means that one treatment method alone is never effective. Therefore, sometimes several methods have to be combined for greater effect and naturalness.
often as part of an operation, e.g. together with a facelift: Dermabrasion is of course also possible as a standalone treatment under local anesthesia.
However, a downtime of at least 10 days must always be planned
Dermabrasion is therefore often combined with an operation under general anaesthetic. For example, with a facelift, you will be out of action for at least 10 days anyway, so dermabrasion is a good fit.
After treatment, it is advisable to protect the fresh wound from germs and air. This is best done with a hydrocoloid dressing, which is applied at the end of the operation. This should be worn for the first few days after dermabrasion. Eating and drinking, brushing teeth, etc. are made more difficult.
After a few days, the bandage can be removed and a nourishing skin cream should be applied several times a day.
Here we can recommend our TBS No 11 Sensitive Skin
After dermabrasion, sun protection (at least SPF 30 or more) is extremely important. Especially in the first few weeks after surgery, but basically throughout the first year after treatment, the new skin surface is extremely sensitive to UV light. Without protection, pigment changes - even permanent ones - can quickly occur.
The sunscreen should have at least SPF 30 and be used consistently.
What should you have heard/read before dermabrasion?
Pigment change: There is a certain risk with all methods of removal and skin resurfacing. In my experience, however, the risk with dermabrasion is very easy to calculate - but still use sun protection!!
Downtime & Bandage: A downtime of a good week should be planned - this is why dermabrasion goes well with an operation such as a facelift, since 1-2 weeks of downtime should be planned anyway and the treatment is in the same region. The hydrocolloid dressing (covers the wound, keeps it moist and promotes wound healing and reduces pain in the wound area) definitely prevents you from being able to socialize in the first few days. It also limits mobility in the mouth area. Plan on softer food in the first few days after dermabrasion!
Prejudices
Dermabrasion – never heard about in the media, so it can’t help much: not true…
facts
The fact is that dermabrasion is a classic in skin surface renewal and treatment of burn scars, for example. No company is particularly interested in marketing it, as dermabrasion devices are relatively cheap and companies cannot really make much money from them.
most common possible side effects/complications
- pigment change
- scarring
- pos. supplements in the direction of volume & moisture (hyaluronic acid) or relaxation (Botox) useful and necessary
details Information on possible complications can be found in the information documents
In summary, good preparation (information, explanation, preliminary examinations, problem analysis, etc.) and the surgeon's experience with the technique are important for the success of dermabrasion
You should avoid…
- Sun exposure after treatment/surgery
- removing the hydrocolloid dressing too early – If air gets to the exposed, treated skin surface, it hurts. The bandage should therefore be left on for a few days (even if it is not comfortable). After that, wound care begins with a moisturizing cream (e.g. The Beauty Secret N°11 by Durnig Aesthetics) and, if exposed to the sun, sun protection is also recommended!!
anesthesia
Possible anesthesiaforms for dermabrasion
- Local anesthesia
- twilight sleep
- general anesthesia
the operation
Deadlines must be met in Austria (surgical information and anesthesia information) – this results in a waiting period of at least 3-4 weeks from the decision to undergo dermabrasion, but often longer.
Important!: herpes prophylaxis if they suffer from recurring herpes infections in the lip area.
at least a week Plan for downtime, during this time one is normally not sociable.
the operation
rest for 2 weeks in the sense of:
- no strenuous, jerky movements
- don't work headfirst
dirt prophylase – do not go into a chlorine pool etc., do not stay in a dirty, germ-contaminated environment
sun protection (for one year) but especially in the first weeks after dermabrasion
If you suspect a herpes infection – start herpes therapy immediately!
our preferred technique/recommendation
- Dermabrasion as the first choice for deeper wrinkles around the mouth
- hydrocolloid dressing for a few days
- then TBS N°11 + sunscreen!
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia or twilight sleep if combined with facelift
Cost
approx. 2500 dermabrasion in LA or as a supplement to a facelift
any costs incurred for anesthesia information
400 overnight stay at the clinic with a nurse/450 if staying overnight from Friday to Saturday – if necessary or useful – dermabrasion alone is usually not necessary
100 Costs for day admission to the clinic (if no overnight stay is planned) – if necessary and reasonable
The prices listed are average values and could be cheaper or more expensive. The final total price will be determined during the second consultation (=consent) depending on the individual effort/planned operation time, combinations, desired clinic/room category and other factors.
reasonable budget
A final cost estimate is only possible and meaningful after a detailed on-site inspection and clarification of individual wishes.
downtime
In general, 1-2 weeks of rest be taken into account – this means specifically:
- protect the facial area
- no jerky movements
- do not perform any activities overhead
Important to know…
- Dermabrasion is very often a perfect addition to a facelift – very easy to combine!
- Sun protection cannot be mentioned often enough!
