Basically, a lot is possible here - there are many different implant shapes and sizes. However, the overall profile must always be kept in mind - additional corrections to the nose or the entire jaw are often recommended.

In addition, with implants (=foreign material) it is always a question of the relationship between implant size and coverage or tension on the implant and on the wound and scar. These details will be discussed with you as part of the explanation.

Size, material and shape of the implant: There are several companies that offer chin implants in different materials and shapes. Silicone implants are used very frequently because they are relatively easy to insert with a short incision and are also well tolerated. Since there are not huge differences in jaw size and shape (and not an infinite number of sizes either), similar sizes and shapes are usually used.

Cut & Scar:

• Access is via an incision from the outside slightly behind the lower edge of the lower jaw (so actually well hidden). This access also corresponds to the incision for an internal neck lift – and is therefore sensibly combined with it if necessary
• The second variant is a cut inside in the oral mucosa. This approach is of course not necessarily the cleaner one, although infections are generally rare (but of course can never be completely ruled out)

Position of the implant:

The implant is positioned as precisely as possible and sometimes fixed with stitches. After the operation, it is additionally fixed with an adhesive bandage from the outside. Nevertheless, slight changes in position can occur due to the formation of scars and capsules or due to the tension of the muscles. Certain asymmetries are also basically always present on two sides. Of course, the area around the chin also changes - the position of the lower lip and the lower row of teeth - especially as long as the wound is still healing and there is a certain amount of swelling.

side profile and nose/chin/chin line ratio: A chin implant changes the relationship between the chin region and the nose and the chin region and the chin line, but of course not the nose or chin line (even to a slight degree).

What should you have heard/read before a chin correction?

Change in the sensation of the region, possibly numbness - even with all caution, a change in the sensation of the region, a slight change in the surface or even a numbness can occur in this area. Usually only temporary, in rare cases permanent.

Depending on the model, chin implants can be adapted to the individual patient. Of course, the chin region should not be overemphasized in women. Otherwise, once it reaches a certain size, the chin will actually appear too prominent.

In summary, good preparation (information, explanation, preliminary examinations, photo analysis, analysis of wishes, etc.), the experience of the surgeon and the material of the implant are the most important factors for the success of a chin correction.

• A large nose can only be corrected with a chin implant; for maximum balance and harmony, a nose correction makes more sense.
